Remix Activity

In my opinion, the internet is capable of empowering all types of people on all types of platforms. This can be dangerous depending on the message an influencer is trying to spread, but can also be very beneficial to its audience. Influencers are given a lot of freedom that comes with a lot of risks. If these people are careful there should be no fear involved, and spreading positivity should be focused on.

I believe that copyright should be slightly modified. Sometimes people create unique pieces of work that happen to be similar to someone else’s equally unique piece of work. With so many people on the Internet throughout the world, it is bound to happen that a few individuals will have similar ideas at one point or another. Sometimes this accidental “copying” is unintentional, and can be very hard to get out of if actually caught by copyright laws.

I have chosen to work with the Public Domain license. Tik Tok belongs to the public as a whole when one is chosen to be published. In my case, my best friend and I made a remix to a semi-popular dance that she published to her account, and anyone is allowed to see or remake.

My experience making my remix piece was very fun. We remade a tik tok by learning a dance that many people have made in the past. We were able to put our own spin on it, and then re-share it to the public. It came out better than expected, because we both learned the dance quickly, and there were no surprises or challenges.

Artist Conversation

Artist: Kiyomi Fukui

Media: Paper; Crane folding

Website: http://www.kiyomifukui.com/

Instagram: @kiyomimiz

Kiyomi was an undergrad at CSULB. She identifies herself as a print maker whose favorite art piece is apologetic garden. Her favorite Japanese food is noodles, any kind of noodles but most specifically hot pot. Her parents lived in Korea, but did not speak Korean. Her father is a retired pastor, and art was the activity that allowed her to understand the reality of his work. She uses art as a therapeutic outlet and a way to bond creativity and spirituality.

Her crane folding art is full of texture and consists of very clean and straight lines. While most of the cranes are black and white, their three-dimensional elements add character to the art. They appear to be relatively small, but very detailed and intricate. Her background is reflected very well in her art, and it is refreshing to look at compared to the usual paint on paper exhibits.

Fukui’s biggest inspiration seems to come from her dad and his line of work. Without him, she would not be as focused on spirituality in her work. Her father’s background was so influential that it allowed for a mind shift from a passion in print making, to crane folding, which in her case is equally as beautiful.

My experience was different than usual due to the virtual interview, but I was still just as interested in her art. I enjoyed her back story and how she has a passion for always being nice to people. The experience was just as interesting, if not more, than usual and I enjoyed her style of art more than I thought I would.

Graffiti Activity

My experience during this activity was very fun! When I usually art projects for fun and need to do cool letters, I usually choose to do things similar looking to graffiti. This made this weeks activity fun, because I was able to combine fun and school work. One thing I did find frustrating was looking at it after I took the picture. I noticed I put too much space between the N and the I, which slightly bothered the perfectionist side of me. Other than that, I loved the activity and had probably the most fun i’ve had during any other activity!

Sustainable Activity

My idea was to create an abstract shape out of leaves and flower buds I could find around my yard. While I am not exactly sure what plant leaves I used, I was able to find a few different sizes and shapes, along with a few lavender buds to make my piece of art. I do believe my piece was able to express my idea. My choice of materials influenced the experience of my artwork because the shapes of the items I chose only allowed for a few variations of ways it could be shown, or else the leaves would not fully be in view. In my opinion, there is no specific time limit on low long a kiss should last, how long a great meal should mast, how long a work of art should last, how long a marriage should last, and how long human life should last. Some people may have an opinion on each, but to me, it is the feeling you get when experiencing them that should last forever. Whether they all are tangibly possible to last forever, the feelings they should give you should last for an eternity. I do not believe that just because some things have a time limit, they should be experienced any differently. Other things like clean water, air, and land should be sustainable and long lasting, but unfortunately that is not always the case. One person, like me, can make a difference in spreading the word about how others can also make a difference. It takes more than one person to make a huge change, but the change always starts with someone.

(my)Virtual Art Gallery

Theme: The theme I chose to follow within the World of Minecraft, was mythology. I visited three different worlds, that each focused on a different type of mythology. The similarities between all three worlds were very interesting, but it was. cool to see the differences between each of the three different types.

Egyptian Mythology: This world focused on statues and different idols in Egyptian mythology. Each picture that I took has very similar characteristics, but is unique inits own way. The differences between worlds are obvious, because each culture is very obvious throughout each world.

Chinese Mythology: This world focused on nature and important figures in Chinese mythology. Most of the world was covered in cherry blossom trees, and figures of animals were larger than any of the architecture. This world was the most unique between the other two because of this distinctive feature that is very important to the Chinese culture.

Greek Mythology: This world was very similar to the Egyptian mythology world, in the fact that it valued statues. This artist focused on featuring open water and sky, making it look very simple, but unique in its building style.

Vlog

My goal with this video was to film a day in my life during quarantine. I did accomplish this goal, but ended up covering a span of two days because there is not much going on to film. Next time, I would try to have a more put together plan and maybe practice being more comfortable being in front of the camera. My favorite you-tuber right now is LaurDIY. Her channel is super fun to watch, especially during quarantine, and gives me tons of ideas for things I can do to pass the time. While Lauren’s main videos are not vlogs, her videos still instill good lessons about how to be comfortable in front of a camera. I would define authenticity as genuine or real, and I would define performance as the act of accomplishing a task. I believe the two work very well together. If your performance practices authenticity, it is the best performance it can be.

Week 8 Blog Post

Now that the race has ended

The team cannot be mended

He doesn’t even run anymore

Not the person I knew before

Unrecognizable to me

With the sudden urge to flee

All the words you spoke

Away in a puff of smoke

With each promise to stay

A new price I had to pay

With each promise to stay

A new price I had to pay

With fragile emotions

I only wanted his devotion

With every glimpse of hope

I am unable to cope

A future and a dream

Used to make me beam

Not believeing it’s real

I forget how to feel

With each promise to stay

A new price I had to pay

With each promise to stay

A new price I had to pay

I was trying to think about personal experiences while writing my song. My process to writing my song was coming up with a rhyme scheme and lyrics. I would come up with a few different variations of lines and ask a few of my friends which one fit best. It was way easier than I expected once I started doing it. I was surprised at how good of an outlet it actually was. While my song is probably not the best, I do think it turned out better than I was expecting. I am not sure if I will write another song, but the activity did make me realize that writing out feelings could be a good outlet for me. If I were to write another song, I would imagine it would be another love song, but maybe not of the pop genre.

Week 7 Blog Post

For this activity, I used one of my friends old show choir dressed as the clothing item that was supposed to be out of my comfort zone. I tried to talk to the few people who were around campus on a Saturday. While I did not take any photos with the people I talked to, ( I figured they were already uncomfortable answering the questions I was asking) I did take notes on their answers. One guy I talked to automatically assumed I was a math major for whatever reason, and guessed my name was Ashley. Another girl thought I looked like a Megan and decided I was a communications major. Another group all guessed my name was Amanda and thought my major was Psychology. They didn’t have many reactions to what I was wearing, which I am assuming was because they were more concerned about what I was going to ask them rather than paying attention to my outfit. While no one guessed my name and major correctly, it made me think about how interesting of an experiment it was. So many people do judge others by the way they look, and in my case, no one judged correctly. It made me think about how I judge others just by looking at them, and how that judgement might be an unfair one. I did think the experiment was fun and the outcome was very interesting.

Artist Conversation #2

Artist: Ana Alvarez, Kelsey Steuernagel, Eli Rodriguez, Ricardo Corona

Exhibition: The Enchanted Borderlands

Media: Watercolor, Oil paints

Gallery: Merlino Gallery

Instagram: @aadorisart @kelseynoelart @elirodriguezdesign @ricardocoronaart

The two artists I talked to were Ana Alvarez and Ricardo Corona. They were both undergraduates in the Pre-Production program. Ricardo had many interests outside of art including hiking, music, writing, and cartography. Ana decided to put Ricardo on the spot with that question, but they both seemed to focus on hobbies that would expand their creative minds.

The formal qualities of the art were very similar between artists. They were mainly images of landscapes and focused on shadows and mountain ranges. The colors were very pastel and blended well together. They also added crystals and succulents around the gallery to add to the motif. The gallery had a very western vibe that you might not have gotten just by looking at the artists, but the work seemed well planned out and went together perfectly.

Some of the content was about “wacky, fantasy character designs”, while others focused on landscapes. They were all tied together with a common western theme. They tried to brig together a western setting with a whimsical mindset, which they captured pretty perfectly. Although I was not able to talk to the other two artists, their art conveyed the same things which was very interesting to look at. You almost could not tell which artist did what, which really tied the gallery together. Without knowing their own personal interests, you would not be able to tell the art apart.

The gallery resonated well with me. It was very easy to read, and although you didn’t need to think about its purpose much, it was aesthetically pleasing to look at. Because the artwork was not easily readable, it made talking to the artists even more interesting. Automatically their gallery stuck out to me over the others, and I am glad I got to see their work while it was on display.

Week 6 Blogpost

I chose this idea because when I walked past it, the fact that someone would burn out a cigarette on a statue was shocking to me. At the time, I was not particularly thinking about this weeks activity, but after realizing how seeing this made me feel, I decided to go back and take a picture of it. While it is not technically vandalism, whoever decided to do it did not have any respect for the statue, the artist, or what it represents. To me, the statue of the man represents the relaxed and at home feeling you should get when walking through that part of the mall. The comfort it is trying to convey was taken away by whoever decided to put out their cigarette into it. I hoped to communicate that disrespecting art should not be accepted and hurts the reputation of the community. I think I was successful in showing that people do shocking things without thinking about others. I am sure a lot of time and effort went into making the statue, and whoever did it took away its purpose. If I did it again, I would drive to a city that had more going on than where I am from. Although I live five minutes away from Cal Arts, my town is not very creative, unlike downtown Long Beach. There is a lot of street art in Long Beach, some that could be considered controversial, and might have been more shocking than what I saw. Regardless, disrespecting someones art should not be accepted in any community. Another idea I might explore through shocking art is murals, by someone like Banksy.
